In 1977 Tony Tangena received a MSc in solid state physics from the University of Twente in the Netherlands (cum laude). He then worked for more than 30 years for Philips Electronics. The first 10 years as a researcher in the Philips Research Labs in Eindhoven, where he did a PhD in Tribology (friction and wear). He then joined the Philips Intellectual Property Department in December 1989 in the semiconductor technology group. Here, he qualified as European and Netherlands patent attorney. Tony briefly joined the management of the Netherlands ‘Orde van Octrooigemachtigden’ (Professional Organization for Patent Attorneys) before he became in 1997 general manager of the Philips UK IP department . In 2000 he became patent licensing manager, responsible for non-optical licensing programs. In 2002 he was appointed as Senior Vice President and became responsible for building and maintaining the complete Philips patent portfolio and for counseling the Philips businesses in IP issues, like patent valuations , joint developments, open source software, M&A. In 2005 he became General Manager of the Netherlands IP department with over 200 IP professionals.
He retired in April 2009, but continues to be active for Philips in many outside organizations. He is chairman of the organization that trains Dutch patent attorneys. He is a member of the board of the ‘Vereniging Intellectueel Eigendom’ (the Dutch branch of AIPPI (Association pour la Protection de la Proprieté Intellectuelle)). He is a member of the board and the council of the epi (European Patent Attorney Institute). He is vice-president of BusinessEurope, representing European industry in discussions with the European Commission and with the European Patent Office.
